Byun Yo-han(변요한, ビョン·ヨハン), known for his strong and reliable performances in works like the drama 'Mr. Sunshine(미스터 션샤인)' and films 'The Book of Fish(자산어보)', 'On the Line(보이스)', and 'Hansan: Rising Dragon(한산: 용의 출현)', is taking on a new challenge with his latest film 'Following(그녀가 죽었다)'.

'Following' is directed by newcomer Kim Se-hwi and tells the story of Goo Jung-tae (played by Byun Yo-han), a voyeuristic real estate agent who witnesses the death of social media influencer Han So-ra (played by Shin Hye-sun). The film follows Goo Jung-tae as he delves into Han So-ra’s life to clear his name in this mystery thriller that critiques the excessive use of social media in modern society.

Recently, Sports Hankook met with Byun Yo-han at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Seoul. The actor, who eight years ago was meticulously thoughtful during interviews, appeared lively and enthusiastic this time, eager to highlight the strengths of the film. His current demeanor reflects the significant weight and responsibility he carries in the Korean film industry.

“I received the script from Kim Sung-chul PD from 'The Book of Fish.' As I read it, I found the character to have voyeuristic tendencies. I was intrigued by the clever and humorous way the script portrayed a perverted criminal protagonist whose downfall the audience anxiously anticipates. Director Kim Se-hwi effectively brought these elements to life, making it a fun role to play.”

In the film, Goo Jung-tae secretly visits Han So-ra’s house multiple times, collecting her belongings until he discovers her death and becomes the prime suspect. The unique setup of two nearly villainous main characters provides an intriguing narrative.

“Jung-tae is an unlikable character who still manages to evoke sympathy early on. I’m grateful for the positive feedback on navigating these extremes. The narration needed to gain the audience’s trust and affection while his actions did the opposite. This duality required a meticulous approach to my physical movements and the overall portrayal. Director Kim’s affection and guidance were crucial in bringing out the best in my performance.”

Although fundamentally an antagonist, Goo Jung-tae elicits subtle empathy from the audience as the story unfolds. Byun Yo-han discussed his process in portraying this complex character and revealed his evolving perspective as a 14-year acting veteran.

“There’s a scene where Jung-tae holds his mother’s urn and cries in his car. I used to feel pressured to get the take right in one or two tries, especially when working with senior actors. I believed this would earn their trust. We wrapped that scene in two takes because I was fully focused. Nowadays, I realize that mistakes can make scenes more vivid and beautiful. As I approach my 40s, I understand that NGs (no-goods) aren’t necessarily bad. Some directors even prefer them. Working with various directors and actors over the years has taught me this.”

Byun Yo-han rose to prominence with early works like 'Tinker Ticker(들개)', 'Socialphobia(소셜포비아)', and the tvN drama 'Misaeng(미생)'. He has since secured leading roles in both films and dramas, including 'Will You Be There?(당신, 거기 있어줄래요)', 'A Day(하루)', and 'Mr. Sunshine'. Recently, he starred in 'The Book of Fish', 'On the Line', and 'Hansan: Rising Dragon', solidifying his status as a top casting choice in Chungmuro (Korea’s Hollywood). Alongside 'Following', he is also featured in the Disney+ series 'Uncle Samsik(삼식이, 삼촌)'.

Reflecting on his acting journey, Byun shared his personal growth and work habits.

“I constantly observe. During 'Will You Be There?', I had to match Kim Yoon-seok’s mannerisms as we shared the same role. I also keep a daily journal about myself. I frequently ask directors questions, whether it’s late at night or early in the morning, to fully understand their vision and the character. In the past, I struggled to separate myself from my roles, but I realized that this intense passion was unsustainable. I learned to maintain a healthy distance, a lesson I absorbed from working closely with senior actors.”

Byun Yo-han repeatedly praised Director Kim Se-hwi and co-star Shin Hye-sun, urging audiences to take an interest in the film.

“Director Kim’s ability to craft a dynamic story with two negative protagonists is impressive, especially seen in the ending scene. Shin Hye-sun is an incredible partner, and I look forward to working with her again. Her strength and mutual respect made our collaboration deeply fulfilling.”

With 'Following', Byun Yo-han continues to expand his acting repertoire, promising another captivating performance for his audience.
